Hytera's MD785iG digital mobile radio keeps communication in motion and provides a reliable communication stream for Italian train crews, even in tunnels

Hytera recently delivered an integrated radio communication solution to expand the coverage along the 1km railway tunnel, allowing Italian train crews and ground personnel to stay in touch at all times.

Tunnels can present major challenges to radio communications. The length of the tunnel makes it difficult to maintain reliable radio frequency coverage, and the curve can lead to blind spots in wireless connections. This is a big problem for rail services, as they often need to pass through tunnels as part of their route.

In this case, a large railway network infrastructure provider located in Italy needs to extend the radio signal through a 1-km-long tunnel so that train operators can communicate with each other on one end of the train and with the ground crew. The communication is located outside the tunnel.

This is a tricky operational challenge that needs to be overcome, but our local distributor BPG Radiocomunicazioni (a partner of Advantec Distribution) recommended a solution based on Hytera products. Hytera's MD785iG full-duplex mobile radio is integrated with a single-frequency repeater to overcome the RF challenge caused by the tunnel.

Due to the flexibility of MD785iG, equipment can be installed in the train, which helps to enhance the communication signal in the tunnel. By combining MD785iG mobile radio and single-frequency repeater, train crews can successfully communicate with each other over the entire train length without direct coverage. They can also communicate with external ground crews.

The system has been successfully tested and has been fully satisfied by the customer.
