SolAntenna sensor from Metos UK

Metos UK launched a blue potato shape sensor for in-store monitoring of potato crops at a recent potato event in the UK, and an app that estimates potential crop yields based on photos and blue mats.

Inside the blue tuber SolAntenna are sensors that measure and track temperature, humidity, and carbon dioxide levels in the store. The data collected by the sensors enables growers to assess storage conditions and take measures to prevent rotting in the store.

SolAntenna has a long battery life and can be placed anywhere in the store, whether it is a box or mass storage. Wireless sensors transmit data to a virtual dashboard, which can be accessed on mobile devices and computers, and provides real-time data on connected devices.

SolAntenna is eligible for new agricultural equipment and technology funding under the FETF117 crop storage sensor category. A complete kit includes 5 SolAntenna sensors, data gateways and repeaters, 4G routers, and a one-year annual data license fee of £3,945. The only recurring cost is an annual data license of £49 per sensor.

"Our digital crop protection approach means that growers can choose hardware, software and artificial intelligence services that meet their business needs, regardless of the scope or location of the crops they grow," explains David Whattoff, managing director of Metos UK.

"These innovative new products for potato growers add to our existing powerful line of field sensors that provide insights that help improve pest control, crop nutrition, and optimize irrigation water."

The company also launched SolGrader in British Potato. This is an app that can estimate crop size and yield based on photos taken in the field. Enter some data into the app and take photos of crop samples on a special blue mat with red squares. SolGrader will calculate the estimated tuber size distribution, overall crop weight, yield and value.

SolGrader allows growers to estimate field yields and evaluate possible yields based on field, variety and management factors. It will also help growers identify poorly performing fields.

Metos UK also launched its Application Optimization System (AOS), which provides growers with important information about spray conditions in the field and helps spray operators to ensure they follow best practice guidelines for PPP applications.

The AOS field ultrasonic wind sensor is connected to the ISOBUS terminal, which provides real-time wind speed and potential drift risk information for sprayer operators, managers and agronomists.

The data can be used immediately on the smartphone via the Bluetooth connection. The sensor is easy to install, has a sturdy and durable design, can be used for many years, and has very low maintenance costs.
