Fox Community Hospital and the Clarham County Amateur Radio Club have been working on a joint project for the past two years to improve and expand amateur radio communications, especially the use of 2-meter radios and repeaters to connect as much as possible beyond the prairie Area. Fox is part of the county's emergency management work.

The Clarham County Emergency Management Department has been working hard to organize Clarham County into a so-called "action zone." We are in the western combat zone, covering many places. Fox Community Hospital and Clarham County ARES are just two members of the emergency management team, and the hospital provides more than just medical support.

The Clarham County Amateur Radio Club repeater used by club members and ARES members is located in Fox City Hall. Because it is located in the Fox Prairie, there is no radio contact outside the nearby areas except for La Push in the west and beavers in the northeast. The completed project will connect our area with Stripe Peak and most of our county.

The completed project will consist of usual VHF repeaters and vertical antennas for standard communications within range. In order to extend the range and link to Striped Peak and Octopus Mountain repeaters, there will be a controller connected to repeaters and UHF radios that will be used with remote site links to provide access from forks to possible new locations.

The UHF radio will use a vertically oriented nine-element Yagi antenna for transmission and reception. More specific/technical information can be obtained from the club’s technical committee, who have obtained the link frequency and have further specifications for the system being installed.

The Clarham County ARES members in Fox and La Push are active members of the Emergency Management Team in the Western District of the County and are therefore working hard to provide assistance in any emergency that requires additional communications assistance. Fox Community Hospital saw the need for better communication facilities and not only sponsored the hospital’s radio room for ARES, but also sponsored the movement and installation of repeater equipment and antennas owned by clubs and hospitals to their location on Gunderson Hill. This is part of the hospital and ARES emergency plan. We are very grateful to the members of Fox Community Hospital and Clarham County Amateur Radio Club for their generosity and commitment.
