Amazon Web Services (AWS) reported on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, that “many” of its web services were restored on Tuesday after the main streaming platform and other widely used websites were disrupted. The report on AWS issues on Downdetector.com peaked at around 11:00 AM Central Standard Time on December 7, 2021 (Tuesday). Around that time, AWS reported: "We are seeing an impact on multiple AWS APIs in the US-EAST-1 region. This issue also affected some of our monitoring and incident response tools, thereby delaying our ability to provide updates . We have determined the root cause and are actively working to recover."

At 12:34 pm Pacific Standard Time, AWS reported that the root cause of the problem was that several network devices were damaged. These devices are usually defined as gateways, routers, switches, bridges, repeaters, relay hubs, and wireless access points. And other core network components, as well as other non-core devices downstream of users and consumers.

Cryptocurrency trading sites Coinbase, Disney+, Netflix, Robinhood (stock trading application), Slack and other services are all reporting issues.

In the update at 3:03 pm Pacific Standard Time, Amazon Web Services stated that it is still working to achieve a full recovery, but services such as SSO and Eventbridge are still in a state of shutdown. "Engineers are actively working to resolve the impact on these services," said 3: Update at 3 pm Pacific Standard Time.

Sellers on Amazon also encountered problems when accessing the seller center of the website used to manage orders. Earlier, Amazon stated that its network equipment in the US-EAST-1 area of northern Virginia caused the outage.

"This issue has also affected some of our monitoring and incident response tools, which will delay our ability to provide updates."

The AWS outage also affected airlines, DoorDash, Google, Ring, Spotify, and Venmo. The Google issue report on Downdetector.com peaked around 12:12 PM CST on Tuesday, December 7, 2021. Two Google users reported that home automation equipment was not working properly.

Gray television stations (such as the WFSB CBS affiliate in Hartford, Connecticut, and the WOWT NBC affiliate in Omaha, Nebraska) reported that the AWS outage affected the content management system used by Gray Television, which is The TV station updates the content. According to the Gray TV official webpage retrieved on December 7, 2021, Gray owns and/or operates TV stations and leading digital assets in 94 TV markets, which together cover approximately 24% of American TV households. API error rate in US-EAST-1 [9:37 AM PST] We have seen the impact on multiple AWS APIs in the US-EAST-1 region. This issue also affected some of our monitoring and incident response tools, thereby delaying our ability to provide updates. We have determined the root cause and are actively working to recover.

[10:12 AM PST] We see the impact on multiple AWS APIs in the US-EAST-1 region. This issue also affected some of our monitoring and incident response tools, thereby delaying our ability to provide updates. We have identified the root cause of the service API and console issues in the US-EAST-1 region, and are beginning to see some signs of recovery. We currently do not have an estimated time of arrival for full recovery.

[11:26 AM PST] We have seen the impact on multiple AWS APIs in the US-EAST-1 region. This issue also affected some of our monitoring and incident response tools, thereby delaying our ability to provide updates. Affected services include: EC2, Connect, DynamoDB, Glue, Athena, Timestream and Chime, and other AWS services in US-EAST-1. The root cause of this problem is that multiple network devices in the US-EAST-1 area are damaged. We are seeking multiple mitigation paths in parallel and have seen some signs of recovery, but we currently do not have an estimated time of arrival for full recovery. The root login of the console in all AWS regions is affected by this issue, but customers can log in to consoles other than US-EAST-1 by using IAM roles for authentication.

[12:34 PM PST] We continue to experience an increase in API error rates for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 region. The root cause of this problem is damage to multiple network devices. We continue to work on mitigation and are actively working on many different mitigation and resolution measures. Although we have observed some early signs of recovery, we do not have an estimated time of arrival for a full recovery. For customers who have trouble logging in to the AWS Management Console in US-EAST-1, we recommend using a separate management console endpoint (e.g. https://us-west-2.console.aws.amazon.com/ ) Retry. Also, if you try to log in with root login credentials, you may not be able to do so even through a console endpoint that is not in US-EAST-1. If you are affected by this, we recommend using IAM users or roles for authentication. We will continue to provide updates here because we have more information to share.

[2:04 PM PST] We implemented a mitigation measure that showed a significant recovery in the US-EAST-1 area. We will continue to closely monitor the health of network equipment and hope to continue to make progress towards full recovery. We still do not have an estimated time of arrival for full recovery.

[2:43 PM PST] We have mitigated the potential issue that caused damage to certain network equipment in the US-EAST-1 area. We have seen improvements in the availability of most AWS services. All services are now working independently through service-by-service restoration. We will continue to work hard to fully restore all affected AWS services and API operations. To speed up the overall recovery, we temporarily disabled the event transmission of Amazon EventBridge in the US-EAST-1 region. These events will still be received and accepted, and queued for later delivery.

[3:03 PM PST] Many services have been restored, but we are working hard to achieve a full restoration across services. Services such as SSO, Connect, API Gateway, ECS/Fargate and EventBridge are still being affected. Engineers are actively working to resolve the impact on these services.

[4:35 PM PST] With the network equipment issues resolved, we are now working to restore any damaged services. We will provide additional updates about the compromised service in the corresponding entry on the service health dashboard.
